From acquisition of land, getting requisite approvals for construction, to creating incentives for providing rental housing, every step of the housing supply chain is fraught with challenges. The India Infrastructure Report 2018: Making Housing Affordable is an attempt to unpack these issues and provoke an informed debate around the urban housing challenge in the country. Based on extensive data analysis and interviews with builders and practitioners, the report provides actionable policy recommendations. The report looks at land-use regulations and their impact on housing markets, constraints to building new housing stock, problems in transacting (buying or selling houses), the state of rental housing, and development of transport infrastructure to improve housing access and affordability.
